what’s up with our malls

We began our research by studying the broader retail global trends of malls, and sought to identify gaps in existing retail research..

With that basis, we then focused our attention to the malls in Singapore,  by conducting a broad scan of the mall landscape in Singapore - by first identifying their general problems, looking into their retail sales statistics..

.. and then deep diving into a comprehensive compilation of all malls in Singapore sorted according to their ownership types, the year each was built in, revamped, and their locations and their proximities to the city centre.

This exercise laid the foundation for our subsequent work, and revealed many insights, some of which were instructive in how we continued our research:

Since most most aging malls in Singapore are either strata-titles (collectively owned) or HDB  (government owned), this statistic cued us to focus our research on those mall types.

The prevalence of HDB malls indicated
importance in studying that mall type.

The locations of Strata and HDB malls were also interesting in the urban dynamic they pose..
